Santa: It Takes All Types

Read Our Take On Santa's Type

Santa: It Takes All Types

We at AdvisorTeam have been discussing what Santa's personality type might be. Is he a GUARDIAN PROVIDER (ESFJ)? That might explain his tireless work to be the ultimate Provider of the comforts of a traditional holiday. Perhaps he is an ARTISAN CRAFTER (ISTP) who takes joy in the unmatched adventure of a sky ride ferried by flying reindeer. Or an IDEALIST HEALER (INFP), rewarded in the knowledge that he's satisfying the dreams of children all around the world. But could any type but a RATIONAL FIELDMARSHAL (ENTJ) manage the master enterprise of getting all those gifts made and delivered? The virtues of each of the four temperaments can be found in Santa Claus. He displays the mischievousness of the Artisans, the Guardians' devotion to tradition, the Idealists' dedication to turning dreams into reality, and the Rationals' ability to mobilize all the players--from elves to flying reindeer--for an endeavor of mind-boggling scope.

Santa appears to be all of the types--and more. He doles out rewards and punishments. He lives as far "up" as you can get, at the northernmost point in the world. His entourage is a collection of otherworldly beings who do the handiwork involved in providing his gifts to humankind. You petition him for the things you dearly want, even things that might be expensive, rare indulgences, and he comes from the sky to deposit them in your house. Who is this white-bearded man?

Carl Jung was the Swiss psychologist who first introduced the concept of "personality type" and the terms we use today, such as "introversion" and "extraversion." He developed his typology as part of a broader theory of the human mind. That theory included the idea of "archetypes," inner models that form the prototypes for our dreams, our myths, and our epic stories. According to Jung, the "God-archetype" represents our need to believe that the universe is guided by a benevolent purpose, that we, ourselves, are included in that purpose, and that all will be well--even if by "magic."

Santa Claus' miracles are like those of the deity who provides a supply of lamp oil that mysteriously does not deplete or a baby in a manger who will redeem the world. Santa can be any temperament--or all of them--as he represents something different to each of us.
